Chapter Twenty-Three

We made it back to the cottage without incident. Mendoza explained that Zaleria had called and said his assistance was needed and since Mendoza had been stuck in a van staking out a very boring road for what felt to him like forever, he was more than willing to come to my rescue.

‘Doesn’t look like Zaleria’s here yet,’ I said, as I climbed out of the van. There was no sign of my Audi outside the cottage.

‘She said she’d meet us here,’ Mendoza reiterated.

Mendoza tried calling her but his call went straight through to voicemail. We shared a look of mutual concern. My list of allies was small enough, I could not afford to lose Zaleria. I stood literally no chance of completing the task ahead without her help.

‘She’s probably just trying to lose a tail before she can come back here,’ I told Mendoza. He nodded in a completely unconvinced way and then the two of us headed inside the cottage.

Jasmine was lounging on the sofa with her eyes fixed on her phone. When we entered she glanced up. Her eyes widened momentarily before she returned her gaze to her phone. ‘What happened to you?’ she asked.

‘Monroe,’ I said. I sank into one of the free armchairs and closed my eyes. Pain was still pinching various parts of my body. The wound on my head had stopped bleeding but now a dried crust of blood had covered almost half of my face.

‘Need me to touch you up?’ she asked, giving me a sultry smile as she placed her phone down on the coffee table.

‘If you’re offering to heal me then yes please,’ I replied, being careful not to engage in any flirting with her. Now things had finally progressed with Leah I couldn’t afford to risk putting my foot in it with Jasmine again. We had to remain strictly platonic. I also made a mental note not to mention what had happened between Leah and me. That would definitely cause an adverse reaction.

‘You’re grouchy when you’re in pain,’ she said. She made her way over to me in no great hurry and knelt down by my side. I ignored the way her eyes flicked down to my crotch despite the mischievous grin she gave me whilst she did it.

‘Isn’t everybody?’ I said, letting her think I was grouchy rather than correcting her and telling her that I was shutting her flirtations down because I was in love with her sister. that admission would earn me a few fresh injuries rather than a few less.

‘I’m going to need a bowl of salted water and a cloth,’ she said to Mendoza. The elf simply raised his eyebrows and stared back at her. Clearly he had no intention of obeying her orders.

‘If you try asking nicely he might be more willing to help,’ I advised the nymph. Then I turned to the elf. ‘Mendoza would you mind grabbing a bowl of salt water and a cloth please?’

‘Sure, no problem, Jacob,’ he said in an over-the-top friendly voice before heading to the kitchen.
